Abstract

In this paper we report the magnetic and transport properties of the layered perovskite compound La2.3-xYxCa0.7Mn2O7 (x=0, 0.3, 0.5) showing metal–insulator transition and ferromagnetism where the manganese ions are in a mixture of Mn2+ and Mn3+ states. The thermopower for the sample with x=0.5 is positive over the temperature range 80–300 K suggesting that the eg conduction band is more than half filled.
