Abstract

(NH4)2SO4 is a ferroelectric having two types of NH4 ions. It is of interest to know if the reorientational motions of these ions change in going from the paraelectric to the ferroelectric phase at 223 K. We have studied the reorientational motion of NH4 ions in this salt at 230 and 215 K using the neutron quasielastic scattering technique. The values of the reorientation times τI and τII and information about the reorientation geometries of NH4 ions have been obtained. It is observed that the reorientational motions of the NH4+ ions do not change significantly over the PE-FE transition.
