Abstract

The paper describes the first cricetid rodent from the basal part of Ladakh Molasse exposed 3 km west of Taruche village, Leh District, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Based on the crown morphology of the molar, it is assigned to Democricetodon sp. (Cricetodontinae). Since Democricetodon has never been reported from deposits older than early Micocene, the cricetid rodent yielding stratigraphic level (Basgo Formation) within the Ladakh Molasse is assigned an Early to Middle Miocene age.
