Abstract

Trends in rice breeding are discussed with reference to improving plant type and utilizing hybrid rice to increase yield potential. The improved plant ideotype is seen as having reduced tillering, large panicles, improved grain size, density and filling, better leaf and canopy characteristics, optimal growth duration (about 120 days in the tropics) and better plant height, stem thickness, biomass production, harvest index, root system and pathogen resistance.
