Abstract

The study of phase relations in the system MM-Co in the composition range of 55 to 84 wt.-% Co revealed six phases, 1:3, 2:7, 5:19, 1:5, 2:17 and β-Co. Evidence for a possibly new phase between 5:19 and 1:5 phase with a Tc of 340°C is presented. The 1:5 phase exhibits a narrow but definite region of homogeneity and undergoes a eutectoid decomposition into 5:19 and 2:17 phases, though the rate of decomposition is quite sluggish. The phase on the Co-rich side of 2:17 phase has a β-Co (f.c.c.) structure with no solid solubility for rare earth elements. The sequence of occurrence of phases in the multicomponent MM-Co system is essentially similar to that observed in a pure binary Ce-Co system.
